Foot Splashing in the sea

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is an unintrusive, relaxing complementary therapy. Only the feet and lower ankles are worked on. Reflexology stimulates the body by reducing stress, accelerating the repair work and natural healing done by the body and boosts the immune system and balances the body. Reflexology encourages healing physically, mentally and emotionally.  Reflexology can begin to allow your body to initiate it’s own healing.

Reflexology works in a similar way to acupressure and acupuncture. Reflexologists believe there are certain points on the feet and hands. These points correspond to the organs and glands in the body. So by using gentle pressure on these points it can stimulate energy pathways in the body.  If any energy pathways are blocked reflexology aims to unblock them. Allowing the energy to flow freely again which aims to restore balance to the body.

Prior to your first treatment, I will conduct a health and lifestyle consultation. This is done to help establish what your main reason for seeking treatment is and if there are any reasons why the treatment might not be appropriate for you, for example first trimester pregnancy, lymphatic cancer, after organ transplant. All information recorded will be treated in accordance with the Data Protection Act and will remain confidential.

You will be asked to remove your shoes, socks and roll up your trousers to just below the knee.  If you have booked a luxury classic reflexology or luxury aroma-reflexology, a premium foot spa will be used to soak your feet.  The foot spa will have epsom salts to soothe tired feet along with bubbles and infrared lights to relieve inflammation. An indulgent foot scrub will be used to soften your feet. If you have booked the classic reflexology or aroma-reflexology, your feet will be cleansed at the start of the treatment with a hot wash mitt which is very soothing.

I will then start with a foot massage to help circulation. I will use a variety of reflexology techniques which will be adapted to suit your individual needs.  I have been trained in many different styles, some which will be suitable for you and some which won’t.

Walking Style - A traditional form of reflexology where the reflexes are pressed using one method of walking the thumb over the entire foot.

Massage - Massage techniques are used to stimulate the reflex points, and

Linking - This style uses energy, a bit like Reiki, a very light touch is used - one of my favourites!

Please do let me know if you have a preference and I will always ask you if the pressure of my touch is suitable.

I will finish your treatment by cleansing your feet again so you don't slip when you get up! Don't worry if you fall asleep, it means your body needs the rest and recuperation. I will gently touch your shoulder to wake you.

Reflexology is one of the most popular types of complementary therapy in the UK among people with cancer (Cancer Research UK).  Reflexology for cancer may be able to help with a range of ailments, including the reduction of stress, tension and anxiety, stimulation of the lymphatic system, increasing circulation, increased energy and pain management. As it’s a non-invasive form of therapy, it’s an alternative to traditional massage for those who prefer to avoid full-body touch. And as there is no undressing or repositioning required, it can be ideal for those who are very sick, who can’t be moved during treatment or touched in certain places. It could also help to reduce nausea caused by chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Overall, reflexology is thought to be very helpful for anybody on a cancer journey. It can help to improve a person’s quality of life, whilst creating and sustaining an overall sense of wellbeing, which is pivotal for anybody on a healing journey (Together Against Cancer). The Zest reflexology wax which is a blend of mandarin and lime essential oils was developed for the Iris Cancer partnership.  Reflexology should not be used instead of conventional medical care. Always consult your GP or other health professional for medical attention and advice.

It is well known that people with diabetes need to look after their feet ( Raised blood glucose levels can damage the sensation in your feet, causing diabetic neuropathy. Diabetes can also affect your circulation, which can lead to you getting less blood supply to your feet which could cause cramps and pain. Studies have shown that reflexology can improve and increase circulation to help with foot health.

NB: My professional code of conduct does not permit me to diagnose, prescribe or claim to cure. Reflexology works on an individual basis, and it is not possible to know in advance how you or your body will respond. The only way to find out is to try it and see. Just one treatment should help you decide whether it will be of benefit to you but it does have an accumulative effect.
