What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a relaxing complementary therapy. Only the feet and lower ankles are worked on. Reflexology stimulates the body by reducing stress, accelerating the repair work and natural healing done by the body and boosts the immune system and balances the body. Reflexology encourages healing physically, mentally and emotionally.  Reflexology can begin to allow your body to initiate it’s own healing.

Reflexology works in a similar way to acupressure and acupuncture. Reflexologists believe there are certain points on the feet and hands. These points correspond to the organs and glands in the body. So by using gentle pressure on these points it can stimulate energy pathways in the body.  If any energy pathways are blocked reflexology aims to unblock them. Allowing the energy to flow freely again which aims to restore balance to the body.

Many people believe reflexology must be firm or uncomfortable to be effective, but this isn't the case.  Reflexology can be deeply relaxing, using gentle pressure that works with the body rather than forcing a response. I adjust the pressure to your comfort level, sensitivity of reflex points and your overall well-being on the day.

I start all of my reflexology treatments with a gentle foot massage to help circulation and encourage relaxation.  I will use a variety of reflexology techniques which will be adapted to suit your individual needs:

  • Thumb walking - Small rhythmic movements using the thumb which works slowly along the reflex points.

  • Finger walking - Similar to thumb walking but using fingers, often used on smaller or sensitive areas. Ideal for clients who prefer lighter pressure.

  • Static pressure - holding steady pressure on a reflex point which helps release tension and encourages relaxation.

  • Massage - gentle circular movements over a reflex which helps relax tissue and improves circulation.  Very soothing, especially for sensitive feet.

  • Sliding or gliding movements - smooth strokes across areas of the foot, used to relax the foot.

  • Relaxation techniques - whole foot holds, light stroking used to calm the nervous system and reinforces that reflexology is not just a "treatment" but relaxation.
